Pebble beaches along the easily accessible shoreline provide miles of beachcombing and even fly-fishing opportunities. Baynes Sound itself is a perfect nursery for shellfish.

A recent newcomer to the area is the highly acclaimed Vancouver Island University Deep Bay Marine Field Station. This innovative research facility has attained Green building standards highest level, namely LEEDS platinum accreditation.

This world-renowned lab does innovative research into sustainable shellfish aquaculture and preservation of coastal ecosystems. The clam-shaped building with it’s educational aspects are open to the public and definitely worth a visit.

Shopping needs are met locally in the newly expanded Bowser mall. A very strong arts community flourishes here with many highly talented artists calling the area home. A palpable sense of community exists in Bowser and Deep Bay. The area is currently going through a phase of careful but welcomed growth.

Courtenay is to the north and Qualicum Beach to the south, at about 1/2 hour away. Excellent downhill and cross country skiing can be found about 1/2 away at Mt.Washington as well.
